About Dr. Astrid Heathcote
My journey as a clinical psychologist began shortly after immigrating to the United States when I was 19 years old; I completed my undergraduate studies at Arizona State University, Barret Honors College, and found my passion in understanding human behavior and assisting in helping people with severe mental health concerns to find resources for a better life. After working with homeless individuals for a while, I understood my calling to be more effective if I had an advanced degree. I completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, while raising my 3 young children. Although it was extra challenging, my children gave me extra motivation and understanding about child development and parenting. I completed my postdoctorate within the public school system, helping marginalized families to maximize their children’s learning potential. I provided resources, psychological assessment and treatment not only for learning/language and social emotional concerns, but also parenting support.
I have been in private practice for the past 25 years and have helped, individuals, couples, and families with a wide spectrum of mental health needs, including parenting and marital conflict. I have established my services as clinical psychologist in my local community and across the United States. I am licensed to practice telehealth across over 40 states in the United States via PsyPact.
I take great pride in expanding my clinical knowledge via extensive continued education via with the American Psychological Association (APA) and the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) and collaborating with international mental health experts across the globe.
I am humbled every day to have the privilege to guide people through struggles with mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and relationship concerns.
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is neuro-developmental condition, often first appearing during childhood with a prevalence of 5%. Etiology and origins of ADHD are complicated and include genetic, neurobiological and environmental factors.
There is a genetic component to ADHD; I can attest to that, because I have ADHD and likely passed it on to my 3 children. Studies have shown that multiple genes may be involved in the development of ADHD.
ADHD is often overlooked in girls and women, often until adulthood, despite similar prevalence rates to men. While boys display more hyperactive and disruptive behaviors, girls often display more subtle symptoms like inattentiveness and daydreaming. Misinterpretation of these signs as shyness and motivational issue can delay diagnosis and present frustration and self esteem issues for girls in school.
The entire process for clinical asssessment and treatment are completed via video, at your convenience and availability. My diagnostic steps for ADHD are scientific and structured via taking a case history, testing and diagnosis. After completion, I will collaborate with you to develop a plan that will address results and discuss therapeutic treatment options.

While it can be daunting to find a psychologist, it might be helpful to look at the different professions that may offer therapy. In addition to psychology, psychiatry, social work and counseling, offer services. The difference is in training; a clinical psychologist must complete a bachelor’s degree in psychology, followed by a 5 year program completion at an accredited university/institution; a post doc is completed following graduation and also the completion of a rigorous test, in order to be licensed via the Arizona Board of Psychology. Important questions to consider when you are searching: Is the therapist licensed? Each state is responsible to ensure that therapists are competent and have been trained to receive a license. If you have insurance contact them to find out what is covered. Your state psychological association can be a helpful source to find a licensed psychologist. Once you have a referral list, call the psychologists and find out if evidence-based treatment is provided for your specific concerns. Evidence-based treatment have been tested scientifically and shown to be effective (CBT for depression and anxiety, for example). Choosing a psychologist is very personal and it is important that you feel a sense of trust and that the therapist can help you.
